Is this just a shameless Donkey Kong ripoff? Actually, it’s not even similar to that game at all. This is a totally new IP which is so much fun!
Banana Kong. Even the name sounds slightly familiar, but different enough so that it’ll work. The levels in Banana Kong are randomly generated each time, so no two trips are the same. This also applies for the terrain. While on one run you may be swinging on vines, in the other you may be jumping on platforms underground. If there’s one thing I can say about Banana Kong’s presentation is that it’s sharp, vibrant, and smooth.

The controls are dead simple. For the most part, the game is simply controlled by tapping on the screen. What this does is that it has you jump. You can also tap and hold, which will allow you to glide forward for a few seconds. As you collect bananas, your energy bar up top will fill up. Once it is filled up, you can swipe left to right and you’ll perform a power dash. This lets you gain distance from the incoming banana avalanche, as well as crash through barriers.
The gameplay, although also simple, has more than meets the eye originally. At it’s heart, Banana Kong is still an endless runner with randomly generated levels. But you’re doing more than jumping from platform, it also involves swinging across with vines, dodging (or smashing through) rocks, and so on. And along the way theres a number of challenges for players to try, all for extra bananas. Along the way, you’ll also get help from your animal friends. For example, the warthog smashes through everything in your way, while you can hitch a ride with a toucan to fly over anything. Finally, you can also buy utilities and power-ups. For example, the magnet power-up is the bomb because it draws the bananas towards you. These power-ups though require *a lot* of bananas.
Although the game looks and runs just well, gameplay is where Banana Kong falls short. The powerups are hard to obtain, but more importantly, Banana Kong is what we’ve come to expect from all endless runners on the platform by now. Sure, it’s a fun game, but it doesn’t think outside the box in this genre.
